The To-Do List Dilemma: The Strategy of Execution
Strategic plan in place, check. Long list of supporting projects and initiatives in place, check. Colored charts outlining responsible party, check. On paper, it's the perfect strategy for getting things done.
Fast forward three months . . .
The strategic plan boasts a couple of colored tracking charts indicating you got off to a good start. It also hails a long list of action items with assigned names, due dates and revised due dates. The folder itself is nestled neatly alongside other large three-ring binders used as reference for future presentations or to justify progress for tracking purposes. At a closer glance, however, a thin layer of dust rests on top of the folder. The glow is gone. The momentum is lost. It's back to business as usual. Such are the markings of a great strategic plan . . . and a poor execution of it.
What happened to the enthusiasm? The vigor? The can-do attitude? Remarkably, it is what happens to the majority of businesses. Although the fact a strategic plan was in place to begin with may make your company different, you are still unfortunately a member of a large club. And club membership is effortless: achieve lackluster results and shovel responsibility to market forces or the organization itself.
Numerous studies indicate that you are not alone: a whopping 70-90% of business strategies fail! What's even more remarkable than the failure rate is the reason why strategic plans fail. Research points the finger not at external circumstances, but internal ones! Circumstances well within your control!
